How does therapy help?

One of the most common questions I am asked as a therapist is “How does therapy help?”

I guess the answer has a few different parts to it. Right off the bat I would tell you that therapy itself is a processs, it consists of the rapport you build with your therapist, the skills you learn and later apply as well as your own motivation to create change! Not all therapy is the same. Some clients come in looking for tools and techniques, homework and goals to set and achieve. Others are seeking a supportive empathetic listener to help process difficult emotions. Therapy can be short term lasting only a few sessions or long over the course of several months or longer. The journey is different for each and every person that comes through the door.

In an ideal world every client and therapist would “click” and the process of change would start immediately. The reality is that this isn’t always the case so I encourage clients to talk about the things they find most helpful so we can tailor their counseling to best meet their needs. Chances are that what you fear may be the worst thing your therapist has ever heard, is not. What you feel is just human emotion and there’s a good chance we have helped someone else deal with similar struggles. Our role is to provide an unbiased trained professional to help work through whatever it is you are facing.

No problem is too small or too big. Therapy is a tool, a process, a stepping stone on your path and one way to grow and create lasting change.
